Adding realism to foraging arena predictions of trophic flow rates in Ecosim ecosystem models: Shared foraging arenas and bout feeding
نویسندگان
چکیده
We update the Ecopath with Ecosim software for aquatic ecosystem modeling to allow users to represent intensification of inter-specific competition through shared use of space–time restricted foraging arenas, as well as predation occurring in periodic short feeding bouts rather than continuously over time. Our study indicates that assuming shared use of foraging arenas can have pathological impact on the ability of ecosystem models to predict maintenance of biological diversity in complex food webs, in cases where multiple predators have similar diet compositions but in fact avoid direct competition through fine-scale separation of feeding locations or times. We further find that the assumption of bout feeding leads to essentially the same predictions about how predation rates ought to vary with predator abundances as does the more unrealistic assumption of continuous feeding. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. متن کاملOptimal foraging in marine ecosystem models: selectivity, profitability and switching
One of the most troubling aspects of ecosystem models is the use of rather arbitrary feeding and preference functions. The predictions of plankton functional type models have been shown to be highly sensitive to the choice of foraging model, particularly in multiple prey situations. Here we propose ecological mechanics and evolutionary logic as a solution to diet selection in ecosystem models. ...
متن کاملRepresentation of Multistanza Life Histories in Ecospace Models for Spatial Organization of Ecosystem Trophic Interaction Patterns
e Ecospace model for spatial organization of trophic interactions has seen limited use for evaluation of policies such as marine protected areas, partly because of concern about representing key indicator populations only by spatial biomass distributions. !e software has been improved to include spatial representation of age structure for such species, by means of the Ecosim “multistanza” popul...

An Ecopath-Ecosim ecosystem model under development for coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico simulates responses of 63 biomass pools to changes in fisheries and primary productivity. Ten key species are represented by detailed, multistanza population-dynamics models (31 of the biomass pools) that attempt to account explicitly for possible changes in recruitment rates due to changes in by-catch r...
متن کاملForaging arena size and structural complexity affect the dynamics of food distribution in ant colonies.
Food acquisition by ant colonies is a complex process that starts with acquiring food at the source (i.e., foraging) and culminates with food exchange in or around the nest (i.e., feeding). While ant foraging behavior is relatively well understood, the process of food distribution has received little attention, largely because of the lack of methodology that allows for accurate monitoring of fo...
